Drug Confirmation Testing
Drugs of Abuse screening and confirmation testing are performed via a two-step process. The process consists of an initial drug screen, most commonly through an Enzyme Immunoassay (EIA) method, followed by a confirmation test for any potential positive drug classes. EIA screens will detect the presence of a drug class; however, not the individual drug. For example, an opioid may be detected via an EIA drug screen, but to find out the specific drug within the drug class, such as hydromorphone, a drug confirmation test must be performed on the sample. All Drugs of Abuse screens that result in a positive result, should be subjected to testing via LC/MS for further information on the sample.
